The Covenant World Relief Sudan Agriculture Project in Malakal in Southern Sudan has been supported in its entirety by donation from our congregation. Through the CWR agriculture project we have provided seed farm equipment and training to members of the participating Covent congregations, most returning in recent years from refugee camps. The project has been quite successful, becoming nearly self sustaining. Produce from their fields has even been distributed to other villages during times of flooding. We are currently financially supporting them in the purchase of agriculture land from the government.
This year there has been a severe drought. Last month CWR sent $5,000 to the Covenant Church of South Sudan for emergency food assistance and is raising another $33,000 to assist 70,000 people who are starving due to the drought and continued violence in the area. Thousands of families are reduced to eating one meal every two to three days, according to the United nations, which estimates 1.5 million people are facing severe food insecurity. The Covenant commitment to South Sudan is crucial as other relief agencies have left the area. Our donations over the next few months will also be going towards drought relief for the affected families in the area and the South Sudan church will be delivering the food to those who are starving.
Jesus says to us" For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink." Matthew 25:35. Hunger is a world--wide, year round problem.
